NFL must delay AFC Championship game until Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes can play, says Colin Cowherd

The Kansas City Chiefs are facing the possibility that star quarterback Patrick Mahomes will not be released from the concussion protocol in time for Sunday’s AFC Championship game against Buffalo Bills, but Fox Sports radio host Colin Cowherd thinks that the NFL should make sure that it doesn’t happen it doesn’t.

The longtime broadcaster suggested on Tuesday that the league should delay the game until Mahomes is healthy enough to play.

“We want Mahomes against Josh Allen, right?” Cowherd said on “The Herd”. “That’s reasonable. And I’m sitting here this morning wondering if I’m from the NFL, Patrick Mahomes is doing it. I think the day Patrick Mahomes can play – and that’s when we play. Why not?”

Mahomes suffered a concussion in the third quarter after being approached on the floor by Cleveland Browns linebacker Mack Wilson. He was slow to get up and struggled to get off the field, even with the help of coaches.

Coach Andy Reid declined to speculate on Monday about Mahomes’ return, saying they need to follow the concussion protocol.

“You don’t even have to think about it. Just move on,” said Reid. “You have an answer if he is there and if he is not. I cannot answer from a medical point of view. I just don’t know.”

Mahomes returned to the field on Wednesday for a light workout with the team, according to the NFL protocol, sources told the NFL Network.

He has no symptoms and will undergo tolerance tests, but there is no certainty that he will be released to play against Bills on Sunday.
