But for the most part, it was Biden who commanded the spotlight. Here is a selection of front pages from around the world.
Canada’s National Post was one of many newspapers to choose Biden’s proclamation in his inaugural speech that “democracy prevailed”.
He noted Biden’s healing message, writing that “an extraordinary, sometimes violent, transition from American power came to a peaceful end on Wednesday.”
UK
The UK’s The Guardian newspaper highlighted the same line, displaying a photo of Biden giving his speech on the front page, while the Daily Telegraph focused on another line – Biden’s call to end “this uncivil war” that divided the United States.
British tabloids approached the inauguration with typical zeal, ignoring the noble rhetoric of Biden’s speech in favor of a coup against his predecessor. “Don’s Gone … Let’s Go Joe!” wrote the Daily Mail. Metro encouraged Biden to “Now Make America Great Again” by re-proposing Trump’s long-standing slogan. The Daily Mirror called Wednesday “a day of hope” and the Daily Express said it was “a great time for the United States and Britain”.
But the most irreverent front page came from the Daily Star, which superimposed Trump’s face on a photo of the Incredible Hulk.
Ireland
Biden has often spoken of his Irish heritage, and his victory has been marked by front-page headlines across the country. The Irish Examiner called it “A New Day”, while The Irish Times said he “redefined the tone” with his address.
Italy
“Welcome to America” was the message printed in La Stampa, one of the most widely read newspapers in Italy. Trump was largely unpopular in Western Europe, and many EU leaders expressed relief early in Biden’s term.
Spain
El Mundo, from Spain, welcomed Biden with the frank assessment that “There is a lot to heal in the USA”. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez later said that Biden took office: “Today is a great day … We will work with the United States for democracy and the strengthening of more just, sustainable and inclusive global governance.”
Australia
Most of Australia’s Thursday newspapers were printed before Biden took office, many focusing on Trump’s departure – with a very clear stance on the leader who is leaving office. “Don’t let the door slam you on the way out” was the western Australian’s direct farewell, while the tabloid NT News opted for a pun on his equally dismissive farewell.

The South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong daily for English readers, featured a photo of Biden with his wife, Jill Biden, and the Second Family waving during the ceremony.
