EXCLUSIVE – One of the two top Republican candidates vying for the likely revocation for governor of California is investing an additional $ 1 million of his own money in his campaign.
Fox News learned that businessman John Cox on Thursday will make a second $ 1 million personal contribution to his campaign. Cox hopes to succeed with Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who faces a possible recall for dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.

Cox, the 2018 Republican candidate for government in California, formally declared his candidacy earlier this month, going live with a new campaign website and spending seven digits to run a TV commercial across the state. The announcement is aimed at Newsom and also former San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer, the other major Republican candidate to launch a campaign so far.

“Schools remain closed, the elderly have difficulty accessing the necessary vaccines and we now have reports of Gavin Newsom giving contracts without bidding to large donors. I am confident that Californians will qualify this recall,” emphasized Cox in a statement.
Cox’s comment on contracts without bidding refers to a new investigation by Capital Public Radio, which reports that some companies that have made large donations to the governor have received large contracts without bidding from the state. While no law could have been violated, the unfavorable view of preferential treatment for major donors is anything but useful, as Newsom faces a likely repeal.

The recall campaign was launched last summer due to accusations that the governor mistreated the state’s response to the pandemic. But the effort increased in the fall, after Newsom’s dinner at a super-exclusive restaurant, which – at best – circumvented the rules imposed by the governor to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
California’s recall organizers say they have already collected more than 1.5 million signatures needed by March 17 to force a repeal later this year. Cox was a major contributor to the recall effort, donating $ 50,000.
Cox, a 65-year-old businessman, accountant, lawyer and developer, is worth more than $ 200 million. He came in second for Newsom in a field of 27 candidates in the primaries for nonpartisan California governor in June 2018.

Cox, who was supported by then President Donald Trump, lost to Newsom by 24 points, five months later, in the general elections in the heavily democratic state. He also made proposals in Congress for the past two decades in Illinois and a remote White House candidacy in 2008.
