Katherine Creag, a beloved member of the News 4 family, who for years was an advocate for New York mornings on the “Today in New York” program, died suddenly on Wednesday night.
Creag joined WNBC in 2011 and has spent most of the last decade covering anything and everything in our region. Instantly recognizable by its distinctive voice and warm laughter, Creag was the first face that many New Yorkers woke up to every day.
His death was unexpected; she had not been ill and was working until Wednesday morning.
“For ten years, Kat was one of our cornerstones, always willing to help in any situation, be it a needy colleague or a shift that needed to be covered. She was thoughtful, fun, and unforgiving. And even on the toughest days she was a bright, quick light with a kind word and a smile, “said WNBC vice president of news Amy Morris in an email to the team.
Colleagues were well aware of his unlimited energy. One of his biographies on social media said “Sleep, what is this ?! I will work when you are returning from the club. ”They also knew all about her passion for good Filipino food, often screaming whenever a new restaurant opened for her to try.
A NYU graduate in 1996 who spent five years at Fox before joining NBC, Creag has won or shared several Emmys, AP and Murrow awards over a career that has also led her to Dallas, Charlotte and Syracuse.
The Manila native and supporter of several charities was the devoted and loving mother of three young sons, one son and two daughters. She left them and her 14-year-old husband, Bill Gafner.
