New York climate: winter storm to bring snow to part of the Tri-State starting Sunday night

NEW YORK (WABC) – A significant winter storm is expected to arrive in the Tri-State area late Sunday and continue through Tuesday.

The storm will follow the coldest air mass of the season, which brought chills from a single, sub-zero digital to the region on Friday.

Cold air sets the stage for the potential for significant snowfall and a winter storm alert was issued to parts of New Jersey starting Sunday night.

AccuWeather is tracking the system across the country. Forecasting models show a growing threat to a significant system of prolonged coastal storms.

Meteorologist Lee Goldberg says the storm is now likely to bring the heaviest snow south of the city.

Heavy snow can be accompanied by strong gusts of wind, especially in parts of New Jersey where the watch was issued.
