New York City healthcare professional has severe adverse reaction to Covid-19 vaccine

Only one of the 30,000 people who have so far received the Covid-19 vaccine in New York City has had a severe adverse reaction to the injection, city officials said on Wednesday.

A city health professional suffered anaphylaxis after receiving the Pfizer Inc. -BioNTech SE injection. The worker, who has not been identified, is in a stable condition, officials said.

A spokesman for the city health department did not give further information about the worker. The department is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to track other side effects of the vaccine, officials said.

“We will continue to follow these events and make sure we are taking it seriously,” said Dave Chokshi, the city’s health commissioner, at a news conference on Wednesday. He added that the serious adverse reaction is unusual and that vaccines are very safe in general.

Since December 18, there have been six reports of allergic reactions to the Pfizer-BioNTech injection in the U.S., according to the CDC. More than 272,000 doses of the vaccine have been administered so far.
