New video shows California police officers fatally shooting Kurt Reinhold, a black man accused of wrongdoing

A newly released video shows a deadly confrontation between sheriff’s deputies and a homeless person in San Clemente, California, in September.

In the video, two delegates from the Orange County sheriff are overheard casually deciding whether to confront 42-year-old Kurt Reinhold. The officers were on patrol assigned to the homeless extension team.

“Look, he is going to the street”, said one of the deputies.

A police officer then asks Reinhold, “Are you going to stop or are we going to have to stop you?”

“Jaywalking here? This is ridiculous,” said Reinhold.

The video of a witness on a cell phone shows the confrontation increasing rapidly. “What’s your problem? Why are you touching me?” Reinhold said.

Minutes later, both deputies approached Reinhold. One of the deputies shouted that Reinhold had his gun. The surveillance video appears to show Reinhold’s hand near one of his holsters. Then, a deputy fires two shots.

The only official comment was a pre-recorded video from the sheriff’s department that said it was withholding the trial “until all the facts are known and the investigations are completed”.

John Taylor, the lawyer for the Reinhold family, said the September 23 meeting was “a blatant and racially motivated parade”.

“They create the confrontation. They increase the confrontation. They are the first person to get their hands on him and end up taking his life, killing him with a shot,” said Taylor.

Reinhold’s family filed a lawsuit against Orange County, alleging that deputies violated the rights of the Fourth and 14th Amendment and were guilty of negligence, according to CBS Los Angeles. The deputies, although relocated, returned to service.
