New trailers: Locked Down, Supernova, Losing Alice and more

So, with all the chaos of last week, you may have missed that Friday was the final episode of Jeopardy! with Alex Trebek as a host. Trebek, who died in November at the age of 80 after a battle with cancer, has hosted the game show of answers and questions for 37 years. The show posted a roll of the best moments from Trebek’s performances over the years (remember the noise when he shaved his mustache ?!) and it can make you cry a little. My favorite appreciation of Trebek was from James Poniewozik in New York Times, which concludes: “He was our man of confidence with the answers, even in the moments when reality came to us in the form of a question.”

This week’s new trailers range from dark and frightening to quirky and unsettling (which, to be perfectly honest, I prefer all of the previous ones to melancholy holiday movies). Come on.

Losing alice

A film director worried about her age meets a mysterious screenwriter on a train, and the two are drawn into a strange relationship. Love a good film noir. Losing Alice was written and directed by Sigal Avin. Ayelet Zurer and Lihi Kornowski star in the eight-episode series that debuts on Apple TV Plus on January 22.

Braided

Look, I just love Anne Hathaway, so I’m willing to give anything she has at least one chance. A couple quarantined during the pandemic right after they decided to separate, ok. But plot twist, they also plan a jewelry theft at Harrod’s department store to steal a billion dollar diamond. Now I’m on board Chiwetel Ejiofor (another favorite) also star Braided, which arrives at HBO Max on January 14.

Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself

What is this weirdness about? Simply put, it is a solo show by Derek DelGuadio, who describes himself as a “storyteller and conceptual magician”. The IndieWire review says it is a mix of “attractive stage tricks and autobiographical asides”, which is also a “meditation on existential yearning”. Hey, I’m ready for anything. Directed by Frank Oz and produced by Steven Colbert (yes and yes!), In and by yourself arrives at Hulu on January 22.

supernova

Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth star as partners for 20 years traveling around England to visit family and friends. It is not just a beautiful travel film; Tucci’s character, Tusker, has dementia and is slowly losing his memory, so the pair is well aware of the value of the time left together. supernova is scheduled to hit theaters on January 29, with a “digital launch” on February 16.
