New trailers: Cherry, Clarice, United States vs. Billie Holiday and more

I’m getting to the point where there is so much to transmit that I don’t know what to watch first, old programs that I want to follow or new programs / movies to be able to follow all the references on Twitter. But! I am full of hope for the next few weeks as there are a number of interesting movie trailers that I am waiting to see.

United States x Billie Holiday

I kind of wish this movie was called “Strange Fruit” in honor of the 1939 Holiday song that drew the FBI’s ire, but I suppose many people don’t know about that part of Holiday’s life. The great jazz singer who fought drug addiction saw the government destroy her career with a covert operation, all about a controversial song. Really looking forward to watching this. Directed by Lee Daniels, United States x Billie Holiday stars Andra Day, and debuts on February 26 on Hulu.

Clarice

Do we really need another show about a brilliant but troubled detective / agent who pursues terrible serial killers and solves graphic murders (usually women)? Apparently, CBS thinks so, because it is giving us Clarice, a series about the FBI’s newbie agent from The Silence of the Lambs that “takes a deep dive into your untold personal story”. See, she has to hunt serial killers and deal with Washington DC bureaucracy! Most of this trailer shows people in positions of authority being rude and / or dismissive of Clarice, which doesn’t really work; for example, the stupid bureaucrat who tells you “we do evidences, not at full moon ”obviously I never saw the movie. If you don’t get tired of temperamental procedural police drama, Clarice arrives at CBS and CBS All Access on February 11. I’ll take a look at the pilot, but if they continue with this scary version of the song “Country Roads” that we heard in the trailer, I may not last long.

Breaking news in Yuba County

Allison Janney stars in this dark comedy / mystery about a woman who says her husband has been kidnapped and likes the sudden celebrity that goes along with the news. Of course, things are not exactly what they seem! The star cast includes Mila Kunis, Awkwafina, Juliette Lewis, Jimmi Simpson, Wanda Sykes, Ellen Barkin, Samira Wiley and Matthew Modine. Breaking news in Yuba County is directed by Tate Taylor and hits theaters on February 12.

cherry

Thankfully, they fixed the strange first poster for this film, which stars Tom Holland as a PTSD veteran who is addicted to opioids and robs banks to maintain his addiction. It is a little difficult to reconcile Holland’s baby face with the dark plot of the film, but there is a lot of buzz about this film and Holland’s performance. Based on a novel by Nico Walker, cherry it is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and hits theaters on February 26 and Apple TV Plus on March 12.

Judas and the Black Messiah

This is the second trailer for this highly anticipated film about the life and murder of Black Panther party leader Fred Hampton, starring Daniel Kaluuya as Hampton, and LaKeith Stanfield as William O’Neal, the FBI informant who betrayed him. Judas and the Black Messiah opens on HBO Max and in theaters on February 12.
