New Tennessee laws in effect today; What do you need to know

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) – Now that we are putting 2020 in the rear view mirror, the Tennesseans need to know some new laws that officially begin on January 1, 2021.

As of today, you are 21 years old to buy cigarettes or any other tobacco product – that is from 18 years old.

Changes were also made to the Amber Alert system as part of the Holly Bobo Act. This would increase the age limit to 21, increasing it for anyone under the age of 18.

Another change is the Pregnant Women’s Equity Act, which allows pregnant women to make more requests for accommodation in the workplace.

There is also new legislation that will allow 911 operators across the state to provide CPR instructions to callers in an emergency. Before today, not all counties allowed 911 operators to give CPR instructions to callers.

Tennessee lawmakers will return to Nashville to discuss more important issues when the General Assembly meets on January 12. A special education session begins a week later.
