At least 36 people developed a rare blood disorder after taking the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine or Moderna COVID-19, according to The New York Times.
- The disorder is called immune thrombocytopenia, which leads to a lack of “platelets”, which are “cells essential for the formation of blood clots, a process that prevents continuous bleeding at the site of an injury,” according to Newsweek.
What is happening?
The US government’s Vaccine Adverse Event Notification System has seen 36 cases of the disorder since late January, according to The New York Times. Each case involved the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines.
- “But the reporting system shows only the problems described by healthcare professionals or patients after vaccination and does not indicate whether the injections actually caused the problems,” according to The New York Times.
- “It is not known whether this blood disorder is related to the COVID vaccines,” according to The New York Times.
- According to Fox News, there have been no cases of thrombocytopenia reported during the trials of the COVID-19 vaccine from Moderna and Pfizer.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are reviewing the reports. At the moment, reported rates among vaccinees are not higher than those found in the United States population.
- According to Newsweek, the Platelet Disorder Support Association said that about 100,000 people in the United States have the disease.
A Pfizer spokesman told Fox News that he is “aware of cases of thrombocytopenia in recipients of our COVID-19 vaccine” and is taking the reports “very seriously”.
- “We are collecting relevant information to share with the FDA. However, at this point, we have been unable to establish a causal association with our vaccine, ”added the spokesman. “To date, millions of people have been vaccinated and we are closely monitoring all adverse events in individuals receiving our vaccine. Serious adverse events, including deaths unrelated to the vaccine, are unfortunately likely to occur at a rate similar to what would happen in the general population. “
Anything else?
The CDC said the coronavirus vaccine is completely safe and the side effects are normal.
- “Vaccination of COVID-19 will help protect you from getting COVID-19 You can have some side effects, which are normal signs that your body is building protection. These side effects can affect your ability to perform daily activities, but they should go away in a few days. “
