The New Radicals – widely known for its 1998 hit ‘You Get What You Give’ – is scheduled to meet for the first time in 22 years, in honor of Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration.
The band, which became famous for splitting up a few months after the release, will present the song as part of the Biden-Harris virtual show ‘Parade Across America’, Rolling Stone reports. The new radicals are closing the event after the inauguration ceremony.
Vocalist Gregg Alexander released a statement, saying: “If there is anything on Earth that would possibly make us join the band, even if only for a day, it is the hope that our music could be the smallest beacon of light in such a dark time. “
“America knows in its heart that things will be bright again with a new administration and a real vaccine plan on the way. That’s the message of the song … this world will survive. “
‘You Get What You Give’ came to prominence throughout the 2020 presidential campaign after Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ husband and future second gentleman Doug Emhoff chose her as his favorite song. In addition, Biden spoke about his personal connection to the track, particularly as an inspiring “theme song” during his son Beau Biden’s battle with cancer.
“During breakfast, Beau used to make me hear what I thought was his theme song, ‘You Get What You Give’ by New Radicals,” wrote Biden in his 2018 memoirs. Promise me dad.
“Although Beau never stopped fighting and his will to live was stronger than most – I think he knew that day could come. The lyrics of the song are: This damn world can fall apart. You’ll be fine, follow your heart. “
Alexander continued, “Playing music again after so long is a great honor because we all have a deep respect for Beau’s military service and high hopes for the unity and normalcy that Joe and Kamala will bring our country back to in this time of crisis. “
Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Foo Fighters are among other acts that will perform at various opening events on the day. In addition, Fall Out Boy and will.i.am will appear at the pre-opening show ‘We The People’.
