New Qualcomm fingerprint sensor may debut on Galaxy S21

The Samsung Galaxy S21 reveal event is just a few days away, and today Qualcomm may have given us a preview of a piece of hardware for this phone with its latest fingerprint sensor on the display, which is bigger and faster .

As CES 2021 is officially underway, Qualcomm is following last month’s announcements for the latest line of smartphone chips with its next generation of display fingerprint sensors. The new Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 will be 77% larger – 8 mm by 8 mm versus 4 mm by 9 mm. This means that you have a larger place to place your finger and also that a larger part of your finger will be scanned for greater security.

According to Qualcomm, between the increase in surface area and the internal improvements, the second generation 3D sound sensor is capable of processing fingerprints 50% faster than the previous generation. Done right, your next phone should unlock a little faster than before.

In addition to speed and size improvements, Qualcomm has also managed to make this new fingerprint sensor capable of detecting through more materials, including folding screens and even water. With any luck, the fingerprint sensor on your next phone will be able to scan your hand, even if it is wet.

As for when we can see the debut of this latest fingerprint sensor, Qualcomm proudly notes that the previous generation was used on the Samsung Galaxy S10, Note 10, S20 and Note 20 phones. Combined with the official statement that the 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 will arrive on mobile devices in “early 2021”, it is entirely possible that it could debut at the Galaxy Unpacked event later this week as part of the Samsung Galaxy S21.
