New outline icons from YouTube arrive on the web home page

After being introduced to the Android and iOS apps last year, the new YouTube outline icons are now available on the web home page.

Visiting the YouTube homepage today loads these new icons in the left sidebar and the navigation drawer. It applies to the homepage, explore, subscriptions, originals, library and more, but not to YouTube Music – which is a logo.

In contrast to the implementation of the mobile app, these outlines are never filled, even when you are viewing a specific page. The current tab you are seeing is a little brighter compared to the unselected icons. This makes visibility a little difficult.

In the meantime, icons are also visible on the top bar for voice search, upload, YouTube app switcher and notifications.

These icons, along with a custom font, are the latest sign that YouTube has a very different visual identity compared to other Google apps governed by Material. This sketching approach makes icons less likely to stand out on a busy page, which is good and bad, depending on the purpose of the design. Although lighter, they also look more generic.

YouTube Music apps still need to be updated with this new style, although it has been detected in tests.
