New Mexico Lobos to hire Richard Pitino as male basketball coach, sources say

Richard Pitino will be unemployed for less than a day.

Pitino, who was fired by Minnesota late on Monday, is expected to be named the next New Mexico coach, sources told ESPN.

An official announcement is expected soon.

Pitino spent eight seasons in Minnesota, attending two NCAA tournaments. The Golden Gophers have finished a game below 0.500 in each of the past two seasons, and have lost seven consecutive games to end the past regular season, falling out of the NCAA tournament.

Before taking on the Golden Gophers, Pitino spent a season as a FIU coach and was a technical assistant in Louisville, Florida, Duquesne, Northeastern and Charleston.

Pitino would replace Paul Weir, who was fired after four seasons in Albuquerque. The Wolves have not participated in the NCAA tournament since 2014.
