When it’s about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, there is no greater threat to the crown than an opponent holding a terrible blue shell. But the latest sensation of speed racing for the Nintendo Switch racing game isn’t just about embracing the blue shell – fans are actively trying to reach themselves.
The speedrun category appropriately called “Blue Yourself” has simple rules: take a blue shell, explode in single-player mode. It doesn’t count if the computer hits you with a projectile – it has to be you. It also doesn’t count if you happen to be caught in the radius of a projectile targeting a different character.
The jokey category seems to be quite active in the past two weeks, with most records established in the past few days. On Thursday, a new world record was set by SkillozGaming, who blue Link in just 39 seconds. As expected, Link has to drag himself far behind the competition to have a chance to reach the top. Once in place, Link shoots the projectile and quickly rises to the top spot. Voila. Himself blue. And on Mario Day too – the record is dated March 10. Is nothing else sacred?
