New MagSafe battery pack for Apple iPhone 12: everything we know

Apple is working on a MagSafe-compatible battery for the iPhone 12, which, unlike previous smart battery covers for previous iPhones, will be attached to ‌iPhone 12‌ models with magnets.

The battery will be easy to insert and remove from the iPhone, and because it is easily removable, it will not be as bulky or clumsy as previous battery options designed by Apple. The MagSafe battery hasn’t been released yet, but this guide covers everything we’ve heard about it so far.

Current rumors

The signals from a MagSafe battery were spotted for the first time in the code in iOS 14.5 beta, which referred to an unannounced “battery”. The name was notable because there is no current product that Apple calls a battery, since the previous battery options designed by Apple were called Smart Battery Cases.

After the code was found in the beta, Bloomberg confirmed Apple’s work on a MagSafe battery, which has been in development for at least a year.

Project

The MagSafe battery is attached to the back of a ‌iPhone‌ and some of the prototypes feature a white rubber exterior.

Previous smart battery cases were available in white, along with black and pink rose, so we were able to see some of the same color options with the MagSafe battery pack. The MagSafe battery is likely to have a silicone coating similar to Apple’s silicone “iPhone” cases.

There is no word yet on the size of the battery or how thick it will be, but then again, the Smart Battery Case may give you some hints.

All smart battery cases had a ledge on the back where the battery was housed, so we could see the MagSafe battery working in the same way and could be the same approximate size as the leather wallet attachment, another MagSafe accessory that goes on the behind a SaiPhone‌ MagSafe.

Magnetic Force

According Bloomberg, Apple has extensively tested the magnetic strength of the MagSafe battery to ensure that it remains firmly in place during charging.

Loading Speed

A MagSafe battery may charge ‌iPhone 12 models at the same speed as a standard MagSafe charger, although this is not guaranteed and charging may be slower due to the lack of a power adapter. The MagSafe charger charges the ‌iPhone 12‌, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max to a maximum of 15 W and the iPhone 12 mini to a maximum of 12 W, but this charging speed may not be necessary for a battery that is installed in the rear phone while on the go.

Development Problems

Apple has been working on the MagSafe battery since before the launch of the ‌iPhone 12 models, but Apple has encountered software problems that have delayed the launch of the accessory.

Apple is trying to resolve an issue that causes the iPhone to erroneously report that the battery is overheating and there are also problems when a user switches between using the MagSafe battery when the case is placed and when the case is removed.

The fact that there are problems may not come as a surprise to those who have had previous Apple smart battery cases, because there were problems with some of them. In 2020, Apple launched a program to replace smart battery cases designed for the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, as some of these cases had charging problems.

Supposed Features

Leaker Jon Prosser, who has a mixed record of predicting Apple’s plans, says there will be two versions of the MagSafe battery, one of which will feature “reverse charging”.

It is unclear what “reverse charge” means in this context. It may be able to charge more than one device at the same time, such as charging the PiPhone‌ and AirPods at the same time, or it may refer to the ‌iPhone‌ being able to charge the battery when connected to a Lightning cable.

Alternative Options

Other companies are developing MagSafe-compatible battery options. Anker, for example, introduced the PowerCore Magnetic 5K Wireless Power Bank, which is designed to adhere to the back of a MagSafe ‌iPhone‌ using the magnetic connection.

Anker’s Magnetic PowerCore was not designed with Apple’s official MagSafe system and can only charge a ‌iPhone‌ to a maximum of 5W.

Release date of

Because of the development problems faced by Apple, it is unclear when the MagSafe battery will be released, and Bloomberg said there is a chance that it could be delayed or canceled.
