The South African variant has been confirmed in South Carolina, reports the CDC.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Thursday that they are aware that the first documented cases in the United States of SARS-CoV-2 variant B 1,351, which was first detected in South Africa, were identified in South Carolina.

The coronavirus variant in South Africa is 50% more contagious than the original strain, said the country’s leading infectious disease specialist, according to Business Insider.

The development comes after it was revealed that the Pfizer vaccine is slightly less effective against key parts of the South African variant.

CDC recommends that people avoid travel

The CDC released the following on Thursday:

“CDC is in the beginning of its efforts to understand this variant and will continue to provide updates as we learn more. At the moment, we have no evidence that infections with this variant cause more serious illnesses. Like the UK and Brazil variants , preliminary data suggest this variant may spread more easily and quickly than other variants.

The CDC will continue to communicate with international, state and local partners to monitor the presence and impact of variants in the United States and around the world. Variant monitoring is why the CDC has expanded national surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 (NS3) strains. We continue to work with national reference laboratories, state health departments and researchers across the country to collect sequence data and increase the use of genomic sequencing data in response to this pandemic.

The CDC recommends that people avoid traveling at this time. However, for those who need to travel, additional measures have been implemented to increase security; especially as the COVID-19 variants have spread across the world. As of January 26, all air passengers flying to the United States must provide a negative test result or recovery documentation to the airline before boarding a flight to the USA. This is an aspect of the comprehensive and scientific response to reduce the spread of COVID-19 through travel and in the United States.

The CDC’s recommendations for slowing down propagation – wearing masks, staying at least 6 feet away from others, avoiding crowds, ventilating indoor spaces and washing your hands frequently – will also prevent the spread of this variant. “
