New Exynos chipset is in development and rumors point to the bionic performance of Apple’s A14

While Samsung’s Exynos 2100 has improved considerably over the Exynos 990, the A14 Bionic continues to hold the top spot when pure performance is the name of the game. This does not mean that the Korean giant is not working behind the scenes to make its future SoC flagship even better. In fact, a new rumor claims that the company wants to meet the A14 Bionic’s performance target, but it won’t be easy.

Samsung and AMD are currently working on chipset optimization – say tuning is difficult at the moment

Although the Exynos 2100 matches the Snapdragon 888 in pure CPU-only tests, an earlier speed test shows that performance drops when the GPU is stressed. That’s probably why Samsung seeks AMD’s experience to optimize the performance and efficiency of the next chipset. A rumor posted on the Korean community’s website Clien states that Samsung is developing an Exynos chipset to achieve the performance goal of Apple’s A14 Bionic.

The first Exynos SoC with AMD GPU may arrive at the beginning of the second quarter of 2021, according to rumors from Samsung to change the launch schedule

This is an ambitious plan. The rumor also states that the performance target can be increased depending on the launch schedule. Now, assuming Samsung plans to announce its new flagship SoC from Exynos a little later, it can continue to use AMD’s experience to optimize the power consumption and thermals of this chipset. So far, silicon tuning is problematic because Samsung may be struggling to strike a balance between performance and power consumption.

However, the initial off-screen GFXBench numbers are very promising, beating even the numbers accumulated by the A14 Bionic. Below are the results if you want to see an early comparison.

Unnamed Exynos chipset in development

  • Manhattan 3.1 – 181.8 FPS
  • Aztec normal – 138.25 FPS
  • Aztec High – 58FPS

Bionic A14 running on iPhone 12 Pro

  • Manhattan 3.1 – 146.4 FPS
  • Normal Aztec – 79.8 FPS
  • Aztec High – 30.5 FPS

As you can see, an initial performance run of this unnamed Exynos chipset shows that it easily beats the A14 Bionic. However, the results were probably obtained with the SoC running on unrealistic energy targets, so reducing power seems to be the current goal for Samsung and AMD. According to an informant, Samsung may announce its new Exynos chipset with an AMD GPU during the first or second quarter of 2021.

We are definitely looking forward to seeing this chip in action after further optimizations take place. Maybe, just maybe, in a few months, we will have a real battle of performance on our hands.
