Netflix is fulfilling its promise to deliver a new movie every week of the year. Here now with the details of a small segment that we call Fame and Fortune is Alexandra Canal. So, Alexandra, I think if any company has the resources to guarantee the content to do that, it’s Netflix.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Oh yes, Netflix says it already has 71 projects underway. This will be a new film and never seen before every week throughout the year. And some of these films look incredibly impressive. I want to call some. The first is “Malcolm and Marie”, starring Zendaya and John David Washington. This film is already getting some excitement from the Oscars. It is shot in black and white. In fact, it was filmed in July, at the height of the pandemic, probably one of the only films to be shot at that time. Zendaya, obviously, an actress who is having her moment in the sun after winning an Emmy for her role in “Euphoria”, definitely excited to watch.

Another film to keep an eye on is a movie full of stars called “Don’t Look Up”. This star Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Meryl Streep, Ariana Grande, and that’s just to name a few. It is from the same director who brought us “The Big Short”. And it’s about two astronomers taking a media tour to try to convince the public that a deadly comet is headed for Earth. So this is another one to check.

And then another one I want to highlight is this new film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle from producer Seth Rogen. He is partnering with Nickelodeon to have a new CGI version of this film. And I think this is a good move for Netflix because we saw how well the children’s category did on Disney +, and I don’t think Netflix has that kind of film enough. I think this can make them have more subscribers. And, of course, Netflix reports earnings next week, all eyes will be on growing subscriber numbers.

When they last reported earnings in October, that number disappointed. They only managed to arrest around 2.2 million. This was well below his own company’s forecasts, as well as Wall Street’s estimates. This time, Netflix says it expects to add six million subscribers, Wall Street estimates 5.9 million. That number will be watched closely next week and we hope they can reach it, because there are many things going on in this earnings report. We have these recent price increases, we have increased competition and, of course, this pandemic, which is still affecting many different sectors, including streaming.

Yes, I mean, you mentioned the competition. I mean, recently we have HBOMax online. We have Peacock from Comcast. And the other night, while watching TV, I saw – I think it was a 60-second commercial for Netflix talking about all the new content. And, you know, you’re not used to it, so, in a way, it seemed almost desperate, to me, the fact that Netflix was saying, hey, look, we’re here, watch us, right? I mean, they really had to raise.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: And I think you brought up a big point. And I think they are doing it because of the competition. If you think about HBOMax, for a time there was only Disney + and Netflix. I feel like these were the two streamers we were talking about, but HBOMax has some impressive content, some star-studded content. They announced earlier this week that they will be home to the new “Sex and the City” reboot. Sarah Jessica Parker is coming back, Cynthia Nixon. The only actress who will not return is Kim Cattrall. And she said for a long time that she just didn’t want to do any other reboots. So, the fact that they got these other stars is a big problem. So I think because of that, Netflix is evaluating this – who they can put in front of the camera and also behind it.

Yes, I am upset that she is not part of this restart.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I know.

Okay, thanks for helping me. I’m always looking for what to watch on Netflix, so that was very useful. Alexandra Canal, thank you.
