Netflix announced its full line of films for 2021, and it’s surprising: the streaming service plans to release 70 impressive films over the year, far surpassing the annual output of traditional film studios and even other streaming platforms.
The launch schedule – which, according to Deadline, includes 52 live action films in English, 10 films in another language and eight animated films – it is also packed with top stars and directors, some of whom have signed multi-title contracts with Netflix (such as Kevin Hart, who on Monday it signed a nine-digit contract for four films) and others that are appearing in single releases. Notable names include Leonardo DiCaprio, Denzel Washington, Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep, Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, Zendaya, Jake Gyllenhaal and others.
DiCaprio will make his streaming debut in the next Adam McKay comedy Don’t look now, which also stars Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Timothée Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, Chris Evans and Jonah Hill. Other scheduled films include Army of the Dead, a zombie film directed by Zack Snyder; The more they fall, a western starring Idris Elba, Regina King and Lakeith Stanfield and produced by Jay-Z; and Jane Campion The power of the dog, a period drama set on a ranch in Montana.
In addition, Halle Berry and Lin-Manuel Miranda will make their directorial debut on the platform this year. Berry will direct Injured, the story of a former MMA fighter struggling to regain custody of her son, while Miranda adapts Jonathan Larson’s musical tick, tick… BOOM!
