Unsurprisingly, Netflix took the lead with regards to the 78th Golden Globe nominations, just like last year. The streaming service received 22 nominations for films and 20 for television, led by popular titles such as Mank, The Chicago Trial 7 and The crown. These numbers are also way ahead of the second place in these categories: Amazon Studios received a respectable 7 nominations for films, while HBO, which was once the prominent TV network, obtained 7 nominations for television.
While you can attribute Netflix’s success to our pandemic-driven life last year, when many people were stuck at home with streaming content as the only break in an increasingly terrible world, this is also in line with what we have seen the past few years. Netflix and streaming services in general are increasingly hampered by traditional studios. This is particularly true when it comes to television: this year, Hulu also took third place with 6 nominations.
Apple TV + is still behind the streaming competition, with two nominations for Ted Lasso and Wolfwalkersas well as a nod to best actor for Bow star Jason Sudeikis. Last year, Apple only received nominations around The Morning Show. What’s surprising this year is that even smaller streaming services are getting some recognition: the exclusive AMC Shudder, La Llorna, received a nomination for best foreign language film.
Like most major celebrations last year, the 78th Golden Globe will be an almost remote event. The program will air on NBC on February 28, starting at 8:00 pm Eastern Time. It will be co-hosted by regular users Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who will be broadcasting from New York City and LA, respectively.
