Netflix is allowing some Android users around the world to enter a timer that automatically closes the app after some time. If you use broadcast programs or movies to help you sleep or put them in the background to get things done, you may want to keep an eye on this feature to get around.

The stopwatch feature will appear in the upper right corner of the media control screen while streaming content. Users can configure the application to continue running at 15-minute intervals for up to an hour or at the end of the current program.

A notification prompt will appear when the timer is set to expire with the option for users to “defer” – imagine dozing an to sleep timer – although we don’t know if this just delays or completely cancels the application’s closure.

Netflix told The Verge that the feature is only available on adult profiles at the moment and can spread to all cellphone users, as well as computers and TVs, if the feedback is encouraging and the apps are relevant.

The ultimate goal, presumably, is to allow consumers to conserve energy as they would with older TV sets and appliances, such as fans.
