Morocco was the fourth country with an Arab majority to make peace with Israel this year, behind the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan.

The Trump administration recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over contested Western Sahara as part of the deal.

Muslim countries have long resisted forming ties with Israel, as long as there is no agreement with the Palestinians on establishing their own state. However, changes in regional alliances with Israel and the Gulf nations against Iran have scrambled traditional calculations in the Middle East.

In his statement, King Mohammed’s office said he “reiterated the Kingdom of Morocco’s consistent, unshakable and unaltered position on the Palestinian issue and the Kingdom’s pioneering role in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East.”
