Nestlé launching the first KitKat vegan bar this year

The chocolate is going herbal.

A vegan version of Nestlé’s KitKat will arrive soon for candy lovers looking for an alternative to dairy products, the company announced on its website on Tuesday. Alternative chocolate is expected to hit the shelves in the UK this year.

The new vegan KitKat, called KitKat V, is certified vegan and made from 100% sustainable cocoa; however, the brand did not reveal exactly what it was substituting for skimmed milk used in its traditional milk chocolate bars. The company used rice, oats, soy, coconut, peas and almonds for its other plant-based offerings; Bloomberg is reporting that this specific KitKat will use a rice-based milk substitute.

KitKat V was created in the UK, where Nestlé confectionery researchers aimed to make a vegan version of their iconic candy that “lived up to the high expectations of KitKat lovers everywhere”.

This is not the company’s first foray into the plant-based market. Nestlé has non-dairy ice creams, coffee creams, rice and oat-based drinks and non-dairy cheeses in its food portfolio, in addition to its vegetable hamburgers.

The new KitKat V bars will be launched in Britain to get started. KitKat, in turn, is produced under a license from Hershey in the United States – and not from Nestlé – so it is not yet known when, or if, the United States will have a tasting soon.
