Nepal expects hundreds of climbers despite pandemic

Nepal expects hundreds of foreigners to try to climb the highest peaks in the Himalayas, despite the pandemic.

The Kathmandu Tourism Department said on Wednesday that more than 300 foreigners expressed interest in climbing Mount Everest this spring.

There is a similar interest in other mountains as well, said Mira Acharya, director of the department.

A Japanese climber and four Canadians are already walking towards the base camps of Mount Manaslu and Mount Nuptse, respectively, said Acharya.

The spring season, which is popular due to the favorable weather, started this month. It extends to the end of May, when the weather gets worse and the climb becomes dangerous.

Those who wish to climb mountains still need to be quarantined at a hotel in the capital and tested negative for coronavirus.
