Neil Mahoney, an Emmy-nominated editor for “Key & Peele” and “Drunk History”, among other comedy shows, died. He was 43 years old.
Actor and comedian Jonah Ray first announced the news on Instagram. “Ask anyone, they’ll say Neil was the best man,” wrote Ray. “He cared a lot about his friends. He followed every friend he ever made. “
In an obituary for Mahoney published in the Los Angeles Times, Ray wrote that Mahoney fell asleep at his home in Echo Park on January 7 and never woke up again.
Born on March 7, 1977 in Massachusetts and raised on Cape Cod, Mahoney graduated from Emerson College and got a job in Los Angeles as an intern at Bob Odenkirk and David Cross’ “Mr. Show ”, and then the movie“ Run Ronnie Run ”in 2002. After spending time in DC working for the cultural magazine While You Were Sleeping, Mahoney returned to Los Angeles to direct“ Funny or Die ”shorts. Mahoney has built a career as a reputable editor, contributing his talents to comedy shows such as “Drunk History”, “Funny or Die Presents”, “Portlandia” and “Key & Peele”, for which he was nominated for an excellent editing Emmy in 2016.
Mahoney directed and edited the short film “Freak Dance” by Upright Citizens Brigade in 2010, starring Amy Poehler, as well as five other original comedies for the troupe. Most recently, Mahoney worked as editor of the short for the TV series “Royalties” and the program “That White People Shit”.
