Nearly 250 fully vaccinated people in Michigan tested positive for COVID-19

Nearly 250 people who were fully vaccinated against COVID-19 tested positive for the virus, said the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

According to the MDHHS, 246 people tested positive 14 or more days after receiving the second dose of the vaccine in late March. People who tested positive were asymptomatic or had milder symptoms compared to non-vaccinated people.

So far, more than 1.7 million Michigan residents have received full doses of the vaccine.

Of the positive cases, 129 had no data on hospitalizations, while 117 had this information. Eleven were hospitalized, 103 were not and three were marked as unknown.

These data contradict a statement made by Governor Gretchen Whitmer last week.

“Zero percent of people in our hospitals have now been vaccinated, which indicates that vaccines work,” she said.

In addition, according to the MDHHS, three people over the age of 65 died. Two of these deaths occurred three weeks after the end of the vaccination.

The authorities said that the majority of the population develops full immunity within 14 days of completing the vaccine series, but a small proportion appear to take longer to obtain a complete antibody response.

The CDC is working to understand the risk characteristics of this group, said the MDHHS.

The health department reiterated that the proportion of vaccinated people who were symptomatic, hospitalized or died is less than those who have not been vaccinated.

In addition, health officials said some of the people who tested positive for COVID after being vaccinated may have continued to test positive for a recent infection before they were fully vaccinated.

The cases are being reviewed to determine whether they meet other CDC criteria for determining potential discovery, including the absence of a positive antigen or CRP test less than 45 days before the positive post-vaccination test.
