Nearly 2,000 COVID-19 vaccines spoiled at Jamaica Plain VA hospital

Nearly 2,000 doses of the Modern COVID-19 vaccine have spoiled at the Jamaica Plain Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The VA Boston Pharmacy team on Tuesday found that the freezer containing the doses had failed, leaving 1,900 injections compromised, according to a statement from the VA Boston Healthcare System spokesman.

The freezer was “in a safe place and had an alarm system installed,” says the statement.

“The plug was found loose after a contractor accidentally removed it during cleaning,” officials said. “An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident and why the monitoring and alarm system did not work as expected.”

Despite the loss, the spokesman said replacement doses were being processed and the health care system did not foresee any interruption in his vaccine distribution plan.
