TUCSON (KVOA) – As the vaccine launch continues, there is a new option when it comes to getting your injection.
The Arizona Department of Health Services says about 12,000 vaccination appointments will be available for scheduling starting at 9am on Tuesday.
The current county-run site at the University of Arizona will be taken over by the state starting Thursday.
The site is vaccinating those who have been in priority 1B since 19 January. Their hope is to turn it into a 24-hour operation, just like Glendale at State Farm Stadium. At full capacity, it could provide around 6,000 vaccines a day.
As it will be a government-run site, Arizonan’s 65-year-olds can register. In addition, you can register for a vaccine from the website if you qualify for stage 1A and priority 1B. Because it is also administered by the state, Arizonan’s everywhere can apply to come to Tucson for the vaccine.
“We need the university cocoon to be successful for all of us,” said Theresa Cullen, Director of the Pima County Department of Health. “The concern now is that the resource constraints that exist now are the right time to make that decision; obviously, the state now thinks it is.”
When the Pima County Department of Health spoke to the state, they said 6% of people who received the vaccine in one of the locations administered by the state of Maricopa were from outside the county.
The state is receiving more than 176,000 doses of vaccines this week. Pima County is expected to see about 16,330 of that.
UArizona President Robert Robbins said 1,000 doses of Moderna will be in the university pod and will not be consumed in the county supply. More details about the website can be found here.
If you are eligible, you can apply for the vaccine at podvaccine.azdhs.gov. A Spanish version of the website will also be available. And if you need a little more help, you can call 844-542-8201.
