The state of North Carolina is the No. 1 seed in the NCAA women’s tournament for the first time in the school’s history.
Wolfpack won the ACC tournament and will play North Carolina A&T in the first round. South Carolina also gained the first seed when the field was unveiled on Monday night.
UConn is expected to be one of the first seeded seed, but the Huskies will have to play their first two games without coach Geno Auriemma, who tested positive for the coronavirus.
The other members of the UConn travel group tested negative for COVID-19. Auriemma will be isolated for 10 days and can join the team again on March 24th.
Although the coronavirus caused many disruptions in the schedule over the course of the regular season, it appears that most of the teams on the field arrived healthy at the tournament.
In recent years, winning one of the first 16 seeds would give a team home games in the first two rounds of the tournament, but that is not the case this year. All games will be played in the San Antonio area because of the pandemic, with the last four rounds being played at the Alamodome.
This could be one of the most open tournaments, with a dozen teams capable of winning the title. There were five different teams in first place in the Associated Press women’s basketball survey this year, including the Huskies, who finished the season in first place.
The national semifinals take place on April 2nd, and the championship game will be on April 4th.
