NBA trading deadline: Bulls in talks to acquire Daniel Theis from the Celtics

The Bulls are in talks to acquire Daniel Theis of the Boston Celtics at the bell of the negotiation deadline, KC Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago reported Thursday afternoon.

The acquisition is being incorporated into the previous Bulls deal by Daniel Gafford and Chandler Hutchison for the Washington Wizards in exchange for Troy Brown Jr. and Mo Wagner for Ryan McDonough. Here are the complete parameters, including Javonte Green coming to Chicago and Luke Kornet going to Boston:

The Celtics hired German Theis in July 2017, and he has won a considerable role for them ever since. He started all 17 playoff games last season (in the center) as the team advanced to the Eastern Conference finals, and started 37 of 42 appearances ahead of schedule this season, averaging 9.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and a block when shooting 55.2 percent of the field and 34.7 percent of the 3-point range.

Theis earns $ 5 million this season, but is set for an unrestricted free agency this summer. Green, a 1.8m-tall athletic wing on the edge of the Celtics’ rotation, will be a restricted free agent in this off-season.

For the Bulls, it is an active day that saw them acquire Nikola Vučević, Troy Brown Jr. and Al-Farouq Aminu. Theis fits the mold of the type of floor spacing with which the great Billy Donovan has demonstrated an affinity, and brings defensive skills as well. At 1.80 m in height, it oscillated between the central and forward points, which would make it a versatile field of attack alongside any of the Bulls’ bigs.
