Shortly won by NASCAR paddock favorite Michael McDowell, this year’s Daytona 500 was an excellent introduction to stock car racing for new fans. As long as, that is, they maintained a six-hour delay, in which a red flag for a 16-car accident gave way to hours of rain and an equal amount of unfortunate transmission fill. The delay was so long that the drivers had time to stop to take a break, which, in the case of Ross Chastain of Chevrolet # 42 (and the MacGyvered symmetrical racing platforms), meant making a big race for his boxing team.
In a video shared by Chip Ganassi Racing, Chastain to the drive-thru window of the second wetest McDonald’s in the world, still in his racing overalls. He shares a brief and sweet exchange with the attendant, who appears to announce who’s at the drive-thru to her coworkers before fulfilling what was probably the biggest order she received that day – six of all, plus a sundae of chocolate for Chastain himself.
Ice cream seemed to do as good for Chastain as spinach does for Popeye, as he fought his way through the race to finish seventh, having qualified in 24th. Maybe it was the ice cream, maybe it was being wanted by the local McD’s team, maybe it was just the extra downtime that helped Chastain. It was certainly not the contact at the beginning of the race that scratched your Chevy.
