Narineh Avakian: Missing California woman who took a day hike was found dead in the mountains, police said

Glendale resident Narineh Avakian, 37, was discovered near the Mount Waterman trail, the Glendale Police Department said in a press release.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the crime was not involved, the police said, but an investigation into his death is ongoing.

Family members contacted the police on March 8, informing officers that Avakian left the house a day earlier around noon and said he would take a day hike, a police press release said.

She didn’t say where she was going, the police said.

“For the family, it is common for Narineh to go hiking with groups and on solo trips – although she has recently had a solo career,” the statement said.

On Thursday, Avakian’s parked vehicle was located in the Buckhorn Day Use Area, along the Angeles Crest Highway, police said. The area was heavily affected by a recent snowstorm, police said.

After his vehicle was found, search and rescue teams from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were stationed, but severe weather conditions – including about a foot of snow – interrupted the search for several hours.

Glendale police said search and rescue teams from 17 different counties helped in the effort to find Avakian.
