Myanmar suffers more bloodshed after February coup

A young man was shot and killed in Yangon, Myanmar, during a protest against the February 1 coup that toppled the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi, according to reports.

The death toll has risen to 238, activist group Association for Assistance to Political Prisoners said.

The violence comes amid widespread domestic outrage and international condemnation after the country’s government was overthrown in a coup led by General Min Tia Hlaing, commander-in-chief of Myanmar’s defense forces.

Suu Kyi, a 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate who was elected to office in 2011, continues to be held by the junta.

The State Department has offered temporary protection status to approximately 1,600 Myanmar people residing in the United States.
