Murders increased 47 percent in New York from 2019 to 2020, as Cuomo reports most unsolved shootings

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo revealed that New York City murders increased 47% from 2019 to 2020 and a shocking 70% of the shootings have not been resolved.

Cuomo spent time discussing crime in New York City during his COVID briefing on Friday morning, citing figures in the context of the next mayoral race.

“Crime in New York City is a big problem,” said Cuomo.

He then cited alarming statistics on the city’s crime rate, pointing out that murders increased 47 percent from 2019 to 2020.

The NYPD reported 468 murders in 2020 after reporting only 319 murders in 2019, an increase of 46.7 percent.

The 468 murders in 2020 were the maximum in the city. 515 murders were recorded in 2011.

Cuomo also said that more than 92 percent of the shooting victims in the previous year are black or Hispanic, another blow to communities recovered from the COVID-19 crisis.

Cuomo seemed to target the NYPD as well, saying ’70 percent [of shootings] are unsolved. ‘

Cuomo also cited crime as a “big problem” before reminding the city of the April 1 deadline for adopting a police reform plan after the assassination of George Floyd and the resulting unrest

In addition, Cuomo discussed the dangers of the homeless population, including the anecdote of a colleague who was hit in the head on the subway by a homeless person.

Recently, several people were stabbed and two were killed by a homeless man on the subway, prompting 644 police officers to be sent underground in New York.

The transit agency responsible for the subway, however, expected to see 1,500 police officers stationed on the subway.

“It depends on them, what they do,” said Cuomo, placing the responsibility on the mayor and New York City to reduce crime, rather than the state.

In the wake of the turmoil caused by the assassination of George Floyd, Cuomo issued guidelines calling for police reform across the state, with plans needing to be adopted by April 1 to receive state funding.

“We have to deal with the tensions and the lack of trust between our communities and the authorities that serve them,” said Cuomo in June.

‘I understand that it is complicated. I understand that it is difficult. But people are dying. New Yorkers do not escape a crisis – this is a time for leadership and action. Local elected officials must work together with the community and its police forces to develop and implement reforms to a more secure and fair standard of policing. ‘

Cuomo quickly recalled in his briefing that April is only 41 days away.

Not all news about crime in New York City was bad in 2020.

For the seventh consecutive year, the main crimes in the city have fallen, although the 2019 drop was marginal, with only 13 fewer crimes recorded in 2020.

The new year started auspiciously for crime in the city, with murders increasing 125 percent in the first ten days of 2021 a year ago.

Since then, however, reports of serious crimes, such as murders, have started to decline in the city.

As of Valentine’s Day, there have been 38 murders in New York City, down 11.6% from the previous year.

Rapes, robberies, criminal assaults, robberies and theft cases have also decreased since that time, a year ago, all in double digits, with the exception of thefts (down 9.8%).

The only crime on the rise since last year so far is car theft, which increased 9.9% over last year.

The mayoral candidates are still clarifying their messages about the crime, but with Democratic primaries just four months away, standards are emerging.

The New York Times reports that many of the top candidates have avoided calls to withdraw money from the police, although city controller Scott Stringer used the phrase before later changing his message to move away from that stance.
