Much of California’s Highway 1 collapses after the storm

A section of California’s famous Highway 1 was closed after it collapsed amid torrential rains on Friday.

The scenic cliff-edge road is closed for 20 miles in both directions south of Big Sur, according to a report.

A California Department of Transportation spokesman called the damage, which destroyed part of the road, “slips.”

“This is where we lost part of the highway and now we are looking at a project to clean and repair that stretch,” Jim Shivers told the San Francisco Chronicle, adding that maintenance crews were dispatched to the highway to detect further damage.

The road photos show a large part of the road missing. Shivers said he cannot estimate when the road will reopen, as engineers are still assessing the damage.
