Mr. Potato Head is the latest weapon in Fox News’s cultural wars

“Talks about Mr. Potato Head and trans children or whatever the narrative of the cultural war is a big distraction,” CNN author and columnist Jill Filipovic told CNN Chief Media Correspondent Brian Stelter at “Reliable Sources” on Sunday.
Hasbro messed up on Thursday when news of a change in Mr. Potato Head’s brand came at an investor meeting. The toy company later tweeted about it, assuring fans that while the brand name is changing, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head’s characters “are not going anywhere.”
On Saturday, Fox News presenter Greg Gutfeld said Potato Head was being “gelded” and Sean Hannity invited Geraldo Rivera and Dan Bongino on the air to talk about the “controversy and confusion” that was created by Hasbro’s decision to redesign the toy .

“There is something wrong when the so-called cancellation culture receives more attention than the struggles millions of Americans are facing,” said Stelter.

When Republicans focus on issues like Mr. Potato Head, The Muppets and canceling the culture, they are addressing what they believe to be attacks by the left against traditional families and the traditional family structure, said Filipovic. “The Republican Party does not and, frankly, does not want to have any legislative solution to these ‘non-problems’. Democrats and progressives are the ones who are proposing real legislative solutions that would help to solve the problems that families – traditional or not – face in the United States ”.

And CPAC is closely aligned with Fox News, as the topics discussed often reflect what the network chooses to emphasize. “CPAC is basically a live recording from Fox,” said Stelter. In a CPAC speech Friday, Representative Matt Gaetz referred to Mr. Potato Head as “America’s first transgender doll”.
