Motorcyclists arrive in town for Daytona Beach’s 80th annual bicycle week

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – Hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists are expected to show up at the beginning of Bike Week on Friday.

Daytona Beach city leaders implemented the COVID-19 regulations, but said it was up to business owners to enforce them.

“I think it will be great. I think it will look like the pandemic has never surfaced, “said police chief Jakari Young.” We are not there looking to see how close people are to each other. That is what the security plan must do. “

Part of this year’s plan is that companies bringing outside salespeople should limit internal capacity to 60%, there is an internal mask mandate and the main street between A1A and Halifax will be closed to traffic in addition to motorcycles.

Anyone wishing to visit the Main Street area should park at the Ocean Center.

Young said there could be fines for breaking the rules of applying the code, but the police will not apply it proactively.

“If they need us to intervene and perhaps help to clean them up a little so they can recover that 60%, we would be willing to do so,” he said.

Business owners, like Bob Honeycutt at Froggy’s Saloon, are happy with the opening. He said they need this week’s money to keep the doors open, especially after Biketoberfest was canceled.

“We didn’t make any money, we didn’t lose a lot of money, but the money we would have made would have been stored during the slow time and therefore we had to invest in our savings,” said Honeycutt.

Down the street, Daniel Myara, the owner of Café Cruisin ‘, said this week is crucial. The city is allowing its business to operate at 100% capacity because it will have no external suppliers.

“I think this one will work and I am happy that the city is allowing us to do that,” said Myara. “It will be normal. We are taking every precaution to have all sanitation stations ready. “

The regulations and the closing of car lanes are in effect during Bike Week, which ends on March 14.
