After eight years and eight seasons, “Mama” is coming to an end.
The popular long-running series premiered on CBS in September 2013 and will air its final episode on May 6. The end of the critically acclaimed program comes just one season after the departure of star Anna Faris, who left the series to pursue other opportunities.
The show followed Faris, who played Christy Plunkett, a single mother and recovering alcoholic who decides to start her life over in Napa, California. Attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings with her estranged mother and recovering alcoholic partner Bonnie (played by Allison Janney), the mother daughter tries to rekindle their relationship and pull their lives together.
The program received praise from fans and critics for its ability to get through humor and subjects such as alcoholism, drug addiction, homelessness, relapse, gambling addiction, teenage pregnancy, death and more.

Before the end of the series, Janney wrote a long tribute on Instagram, thanking his castmates and fans for their time on the show, noting that it was “one of the greatest honors of my life”.
“Being able to be part of mommy for the past 8 years … showing the laughter, love and hope that can come with recovery was one of the great honors of my life,” she wrote before thanking a list of crew members and fellow cast members, including Faris.
“Our entire team, their laughter and love and dedication to this show made it a joy to come to work,” she continued. “And last but not least, all of our extraordinary fans !!! Thank you for all your support over the years.”
The show’s creators, Chuck Lorre and Gemma Baker, along with executive producer Nick Bakay, also released a statement about the series’ completion, referring to the opportunity to work on “Mother” as a “great honor” as well.

“For the past eight years, we have had the great honor of bringing these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers every week,” the three said in a joint statement, by Entertainment Tonight. “From the beginning, we decided to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series.
“Whether it was the emotional reactions of the live audience on the night recording within Stage 20, or the discussions at the White House about the opioid crisis, or the personal stories we continue to receive on social media, we are very proud to know mom positively impacted so many lives. We are forever grateful to our brilliant cast and guest stars, wonderful writers and incredible team for making this journey with us. “

“Mama” received several accolades, winning Janney two consecutive Primetime Emmy awards for best supporting actress in a comedy series in 2014 and 2015, while she was nominated in 2016. She was also nominated for best lead actress in a comedy series in 2017 and 2018 In addition, the program received nominations in various categories at the People’s Choice Awards, Critics’ Choice Television Awards and Golden Globe Awards.
In September, Faris, 44, announced his departure from the series to “seek new opportunities” while thanking Lorre and his co-workers in the process.

“The past seven years at Mom have been some of the most rewarding and rewarding of my career,” Faris said in a statement at the time, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “I am very grateful to Chuck, the writers and my incredible castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. As my journey as Christy has ended, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I will be watching the next season and cheering for my next season. TV family. “
In a recent appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”, Janney, 61, talked about Faris’ absence and noted that it was “very strange” without her.

“It was really weird,” said Janney about returning to the set. “She misses a lot. Anna is lost and her character on the show is lost.”
She added: “We are very happy that she is doing what she wants now and even happier that we can still tell these stories about these wonderful women and recovery. Characters that have been established.”
