Most New York Democratic congressmen, including Congressman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Judiciary President Jerry Nadler, on Friday made almost simultaneous calls for Governor Andrew Cuomo to step down.
“The repeated accusations against the governor and the way he responded to them made it impossible for him to continue to govern at this point,” Nadler said in a statement on Twitter.
“Governor Cuomo has lost the confidence of the people of New York. Governor Cuomo must resign,” said Nadler.
So far, 11 of the 19 New York City Democrats have called for Cuomo’s resignation.
The exalted Democratic governor faced resignations from state politicians from his own party due to a growing list of sexual harassment and accusations of workplace misconduct against him.
Cuomo has repeatedly promised not to resign and urged people to suspend the trial of the countless charges against him until the conclusion of an investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
But Democrats and Republicans in the Empire State have only increased pressure on Cuomo, most recently by taking steps towards an impeachment investigation.
Cuomo suggested that the attacks are motivated by politics. Several Democrats in New York are currently considering launching proposals for Mr. Cuomo’s post, as his political future looks increasingly dubious.
But a deluge of Democratic congressmen on Friday morning joined the growing chorus against Cuomo, who is under fire not only for accusations of harassment, but also for the way his government has dealt with Covid in nursing homes.
“As members of the New York delegation to the US House of Representatives, we believe in these women, we believe in reporting, we believe in the Attorney General, and we believe in the fifty-five members of the New York State legislature, including the Majority Leading State Senate. , who concluded that Governor Cuomo can no longer lead effectively in the face of so many challenges, “said representatives Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman in a joint statement.

“As civil servants, we must earn the trust and respect of those we represent. There is only one way for the governor to really restore responsibility and confidence in his office: he must resign,” said Rep. Nydia Velazquez, DN’s statement. Y.
The Chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Carolyn Maloney, DN.Y., in her own statement said: “We have come a long way, but now is the time to finally ensure that the courage of this generation does away with the harassment of a once and for all. “
Notably, the two Democratic senators in New York are so far unwilling to call for Cuomo’s resignation.
On Thursday, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., classified the latest complaint against Cuomo as “nauseating”, but did not actually demand that the governor resign.
Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, DN.Y., did not immediately respond to House Democrats’ requests for comment on development. The White House also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Tuesday that she spoke with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris about Cuomo’s controversies, “and I will reiterate on his behalf that they believe that all women should be heard, which must be treated with respect. “
