Most admired Gallup 2020: top lists of Donald Trump and Michelle Obama

It is the first time that Trump tops the list alone, ending a 12-year race for his predecessor, Barack Obama, with whom he tied as most admired in 2019. For Michelle Obama, it is her third consecutive year as the most admired woman in America.
For Trump, the title partly reflects his enduring popularity among Republicans, even after a tumultuous year in which he was accused of impeachment, widely criticized for his government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and racial tensions, and the lost re-election. Gallup noted that few Republicans have nominated anyone other than the president – who has a 39 percent overall approval rating – while Democrats split their votes.

Barack Obama came in second among men, with 15%. President-elect Joe Biden came in third with 6% and Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s leading infectious disease specialist, came in fourth with 3%. Pope Francis, independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Bill Gates were also among the most admired men on the list.

Among party lines, 48% of Republicans chose Trump, while Obama was the first choice among Democrats with 32% and Biden received 13% among Democrats. Trump and Obama were split between independents with 11%.

For the most admired woman, Michelle Obama received 10% of the vote. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris followed behind Obama with 6% and First Lady Melania Trump came in third with 4%. Melania Trump took second place behind Michelle Obama in 2019 and was among the 10 most admired women in the past four years, but she never came first.

Hillary Clinton, Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Queen Elizabeth II were also among the most admired women.

The survey was conducted by telephone from December 1 to 17, among a random sample of 1,018 adults. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

FIX: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated Bernie Sanders’ party affiliation. He is an independent who agrees with Democrats.
