Morning report: Michael Bisping demands responsibility at the MMA trial: ‘In any other walk of life, if you do a shit job, you will be fired’

Don’t say “don’t leave this in the hands of the judges” around Michael Bisping.

This weekend, former UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway returns to the cage against Calvin Kattar at UFC Fight Island 7. It’s a long-awaited fight and a Bisping was discussing the fight on his Believe me podcast recently. During the preview, the conversation turned to Holloway’s most recent fight, a controversial decision loss to Alexander Volkanovski in his rematch last year and the phrase “don’t leave it to the judges” was pronounced, which led Bisping to a tangent.

“I hate that expression because no fighter wants to leave it in the hands of the judges,” said Bisping. “No fighter has ever, ever thought, ‘Oooo, do you know what I’m going to do? I will leave this in the hands of three random people I have never met. I will work hard for several months, I will put my career at risk, I will put my health at risk, I will fight in a fight and what I will do is a strategy: I will leave it to the judges because we all know that they commit many mistakes, so this is what I’m going to do. ‘Nobody plans that! You want to get in, get out. You are not paid for overtime. If you get a quick knockout, great! Unfortunately, when you’re fighting the best guys in the world, and you’re also one of the best guys in the world, you can’t always get them out of there. “

The MMA trial has been a source of constant frustration for fans and fighters in recent years, with apparently every fight card having at least one jury decision to scratch their heads. In recent years, several MMA luminaries have offered a litany of ways to help fix it, from open scoring to adding more judges and former fighters to becoming judges, but for Bisping the solution to the problem is simple, it just needs to be enacted: responsibility for screwing up.

“In almost every event there is a bizarre struggle that is marked,” continued Bisping. “Even commenting, I was like, ‘What the fuck is this? How did this judge come to that conclusion? ‘I already said that and I will repeat, they need to be held accountable. Number one, these guys are doing a job. They are doing work. They get paid! So you have to do this job well. On any other walk of life, if you do shitty work, you will be fired!

“When I say responsible, it is very simple. If there’s a bizarre score that doesn’t make sense, he sits in a room with two or three other judges and you explain why you scored that way, and if you can’t give a viable excuse that’s rational and credible, then you’re incompetent or inaccurate and, in any case, not suitable for fucking work. It’s as simple as that and I don’t understand why it wasn’t implemented.

“… Sometimes a judge’s decision can change your life, change the amount of money you are about to earn, can make you a world champion, can make you not a world champion. That’s a big bet! “

The answer is probably also quite simple: there is no money in it. Adding supervision to the judgment would be an increase in work for minimal gain (and arguably tangible losses) from the commission’s point of view. Unfortunately for some fighters, this means that they will get on the wrong side of things from time to time and the best way to avoid this would be, in fact, not to leave their destiny in the hands of the judges.
