More than 80 counties in Illinois offer COVID vaccine to residents age 16 and older – NBC Chicago

More than 80 counties in Illinois have expanded the eligibility of the COVID vaccine to state residents aged 16 and over, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Citing a survey by the state’s local health departments, IDPH released a list of counties that already expanded eligibility a week before the state did the same. There are 102 counties in total in the state.

The state had previously authorized any local health department “seeing early signs of unfulfilled appointments to start vaccinating all residents aged 16 and over at its immediate discretion, in order to use the vaccine as soon as possible and to mitigate the increase in new cases of COVID-19, “IDPH said.

As of April 12, statewide eligibility is expected to increase for all residents age 16 and older, although it is unclear whether Chicago will join the rest of the state to do so.

According to IDPH, the expansion will mean that all state-supported mass vaccination sites, local health departments and pharmacy partners who receive vaccine from the state allocation “will be instructed to fully open eligibility”.
