Monopoly getting a long overdue social reform, says Hasbro

The board game “Monopoly” will be the next classic entertainment brand to receive a socially conscious transformation, Hasbro publisher announced this week.

Hasbro will change all 16 Banco Imobiliário “community chest” cards to remove outdated concepts. The company said the classic versions of the cards, which included promotions for beauty contests and holiday funds, were “too late for an update”.

The new community chest cards will focus on topics that emphasize “community”. Hasbro asked the public to vote for possible substitutes, with rewards for in-game actions, such as rescuing a dog or shopping on site, among the options. Other cards would penalize players for forgetting to recycle or blow up music late at night.

“The world has changed a lot since Monopoly became a household name over 85 years ago, and clearly the community today is more important than ever,” said Eric Nyman, director of consumption at Hasbro. “We felt that 2021 was the perfect time to give fans the opportunity to show the world what the community means to them by voting on new community chest cards.”

Hasbro said the updated version of the Monopoly with new community cards will be available this fall. It was not clear whether a classic version of the game was yet to be sold.

Not everyone was satisfied with Hasbro’s announcement. Critics turned to social media to express their discontent with the company’s decision.

“Hasbro is looking to“ update ”the game: I say,“ Don’t mess with a classic. I still want to win a Beauty Contest and win £ 10! ”Said Gyles Brandreth, former champion of the European Real Estate Bank.

“No. Just not. What makes the game so amazing is the old-fashioned quality …” another social media user wrote.

The move to Monopoly was announced weeks after Hasbro said it would change the “Mr. Potato Head ”from the product line for“ Potato Head ”. The company said the change was made to “better reflect the complete line”.

Earlier this month, Dr. Seuss Enterprises attracted conservative scrutiny after announcing that he would no longer publish six of his books due to “insensitive and racist images”.
