MoneyRates study shows the best and worst health conditions in 2021

FOSTER CITY, California., January 12, 2021 / PRNewswire / – MoneyRates.com today updated its award-winning survey on health quality across U.S. states and finds the states that are best positioned to meet the challenges of coronavirus and other ongoing demands. The most recent study confirms that where you live can affect access, cost and effectiveness of health services.

The full report, Vital signs: Best States for Healthcare 2021, includes an interactive map that allows consumers to easily compare health conditions across up to three states at the same time.

To analyze the quality of health, MoneyRates ranked all 50 states plus the District of Colombia in eight factors:

  1. Health insurance coverage
  2. Reported health status
  3. Child immunization coverage
  4. Child mortality
  5. Adequacy of the nursing home
  6. Adequacy of the medical office team
  7. Hospital price
  8. Health insurance accessibility

Based on an average rating among the above criteria, Iowa emerges as the best state this year for health, beating Massachusetts of your overall position in last year’s report. At the opposite end of the spectrum, South Carolina fight for the last place for the second consecutive year.

The health disparity between states is illustrated in the following examples:

  • AN Texas resident is six times more likely than one in Massachusetts missing health insurance
  • Virginia residents are almost twice as likely District of Colombia to describe themselves as having regular or poor health
  • The infant mortality rate in Mississippi is 2.4 times more than in New Hampshire
  • The cost of a daily hospital stay is more than 2.5 times higher in Washington State as in Mississippi

“As COVID cases overwhelm health systems across the country, it becomes increasingly important to understand which states are most likely to provide high quality care,” he notes. Richard Barrington, senior financial analyst at MoneyRates. “Health is a factor considered by those who determine the best states to retire to, and also by those who are thinking about the best states to raise a family”.

Iowa reaches the top ten ranking in four of the eight categories this year, with the top position in health insurance and child immunization coverage. The top ten states for providing health services in general include:

  1. Iowa
  2. Massachusetts
  3. Nebraska (necktie)
  4. North Dakota (necktie)
  5. Connecticut
  6. Rhode Island
  7. New Hampshire
  8. Virginia
  9. Maryland
  10. Kentucky

States ranked among the ten worst are listed from the worst to 10º-worse:

  1. South Carolina
  2. Oklahoma
  3. Alaska
  4. New Mexico
  5. Texas
  6. Georgia
  7. Arizona
  8. California
  9. North Caroline
  10. Nevada

“It is clear that where people live can significantly affect the health care they receive,” explains Barrington. “With healthcare systems taxed like never before, this can be crucial information to consider.”

Barrington is available to develop this research and its results.
