Allison Janney was taken aback by the CBS decision to close Mommy?
During an apparition on Wednesday The Late Late Show, the Emmy winner told James Corden that she anticipated that the sober comedy would be renewed for at least another season. But in February, the network made what Janney described as an earlier-than-expected call to end the decently evaluated multi-camera.
“I’m sad,” said Janney. “I wish we had at least another year for writers to have so much time to prepare for the end. We kind of found out sooner than we thought we would hear. We thought, ‘Surely they are going to want more Mommy, ‘and they decided not to. “
The decision to end things, Janney imagined, was probably a financial one.
“There are so many reasons behind this – most of them probably money,” she said. “But I know that Chuck Lorre is writing the final episode, and we are now filming the penultimate episode.
“I’m having a lot of moments when I’m just on set, taking in and looking at all the faces I’ve seen for eight years,” continued Janney. “Suddenly, he’s gone. And no matter how much I prepare for it, I know that I’m going to be just tears, buckets of tears, because it’s been so incredible. The incredible letters I get from people who are on the program or have been sober with us. It’s been a great show to be a part of, and it’s so rare when you do something like that [where] affects people in a positive way in the world. It makes me sad, but forward. ”(TVLine contacted CBS for comment.)
Janney previously reflected on the news of the final season in a candid Instagram post on February 18. “Getting to be part of Mommy these past eight years – showing the laughter, love and hope that can come from recovery – have been one of the great honors of my life, ”she wrote. “I want to thank [executive producers] Chuck Lorre, Gemma Baker [and] Nick Bakay, and all the writers … for giving us these wonderfully flawed and adorable characters to bring to life. “
Mommythe eighth season marked the first (and now only) season without Anna Faris, who played Janney’s on-screen daughter, Christy. After Faris left, Christy was sent to Georgetown Law School in Washington DC on a full scholarship.
