Nicole Paulk was leafing through her phone in bed one June morning when an email from a colleague woke her up. It was an article: Two patients in an Audentes gene therapy trial died, paralyzing the study.

Paulk, who runs a gene therapy laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco, planned to spend the day listening to lectures at the American Association for Cancer Research’s annual meeting that would take place that week. Instead, she skipped the conference, canceled all work calls on her calendar, and started calling colleagues from academia and industry, trying to find out what happened and why. All the while, a single name hung on the back of his head.
