For the second time this off-season, a generation star is in the commercial block.
And for the second time this off-season, that player does not appear destined for the New York Yankees.
Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the Colorado Rockies are talking about switching third baseman Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Arenado, 29, would likely waive his no-trade clause to join the Cardinals and perhaps agree to withdraw his right to withdraw after the 2021 season. The Rocky Mountains, to escape his $ 199 million guarantee over the next six seasons, they would almost certainly absorb at least one expensive Cardinal veteran, while receiving prospects in the business.

Arenado is the real deal: he is eight times Gold Glove Award winner, five times All-Star and four times Silver Slugger Award. The Yankees were mentioned in some circles earlier this winter as a potential commercial destination for Arenado. Much like they were touted as a likely landing spot for shortstop Francisco Lindor, which the Cleveland Indians negotiated with the New York Mets.
But a change of Arenado would be a double problem for the Yankees. Rosenthal reports that an “exchange of Arenado may signal an impulse from the Rocky Mountains to sign another of its stars, the shortstop Trevor Story, for a long term extension”. The Yankees were mentioned as a possible suitor for Story, especially with the Yankees less than overwhelmed by the idea of Gleyber Torres staying on the shortstop.
