MLB News: Astros players are named in an illegal ball treatment scheme

The Houston Astros and cheating, a game made paradise. Just over a year after the news that the MLB was starting an investigation in Houston for the use of videos, they are back and making headlines again.

To be fair, the Angels and many other players are also in the headlines. A former Anaheim club manager named several pitchers who helped develop a substance to use when pitching for better grip. Former Astro Gerrit Cole and current Houston pitcher Justin Verlander were mentioned in the report by former Angels employee Brian Harkins.

In the report released by the LA Times, Harkins reveals a 2019 text message from Gerrit Cole, now with the Yankees. In the message, Cole asked Harkins for help in developing a new substance to use that will not be changed by cold weather. Harkins was fired by the MLB after an investigation revealed that he had helped players cheat since the days of Troy Percival.

According to the article, Harkins was interviewed by the MLB about the allegations in March. Regardless, there has been no public discourse on the situation, regardless of what Harkins claims. All the statements would make sense, given what players like Trevor Bauer have said about the Astros in the past.

The claim would also make sense in terms of Cole and Verlander’s career arcs. Both guys experienced dramatic increases in turnover, as well as overall success in coming to other teams’ Astros. For the time being, it remains a bold claim and that the MLB will have to stay under control.
